English Translation:
Started from Nothing, Breaking Barriers
This pieces is one of the works included in the show Con Ojos Nublados.
This piece was inspired by the experiences of immigrants. It is an ode to all the people who've made the extremely difficult decision to leave everything behind - their country, their home, their family - to pursue a dream of a better life. Many arrive to an unfamiliar country, with an unfamiliar language and customs, and yet many of these immigrants don't have the option to fail. All of the obstacles and setbacks have to be turned into redirection, because for them, there is no safety net to fall back onto.
Large stalls filled with all kinds of clay pots and pans was a familiar site when I visited Mexico. This work consists of various cantaritos, famous mexican-inspired clay cups. On a small podium, they're lined up in a line, varying in size and shape as you go through the line. Ultimately ending up with a visual of broken cups on the floor beside the podium. A visual representation of, not only the barriers you've had to overcome, but also the journey of starting from nothing and working your way to where you are.
